Bentonville, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is the only remaining incorporated community in Pulaski County. Bentonville was founded on May 25, 1871 by James B. Benton and his wife Fannie Gentry as a post office and store community named for their five children: Jimmie (1868-1947), Willie (1870-1946), Alice (1872-1956), Franklin (1874-1945) and infant daughter Fannie Belle Benton born on October 11, 1875. The first post office was established at Bentonville on July 1, 1870 by James B. Benton with Pembroke as the mailing address. In 1876, the name of the post office was changed to "Bentonville" after James B.'s brother Daniel Benton who had settled there in 1865 from Illinois. On May 25, 1871,James B., wife Fannie Gentry and six children set out from Illinois for what would be their final home in Arkansas before becoming citizens of that state on November 15th of that year; they arrived at this location just outside present day Rogers City but soon found themselves having to start a new land grant due to lack of trees suitable for farming near Fort Smith; this resulted in them naming their new town after themselves as it would provide them with some semblance of permanence should they ever lose their grants or move away from it during times of upheaval like Reconstruction or World War II which occurred all over Arkansas In 1893 when Arkansas became a state under Ulysses S Grant its capital city moved from Little Rock to Little Rock River Center although most of north central Pulaski County remained unincorporated until 1907 when it became part of Clinton County; this left much unincorporated land southwest of Rogers City including much today's portion of Bentonville except for a small sliver that now lies just east side arterial road US Highway 59 between Rogers City and Highway 49 running through its center The original store building which still stands today along what is now US Highway 59/Highway 49 stands where the first post Office operated until 1978 when it burned down In 1903 an addition was made to what is now the main square inside the old store building which included two stories plus basement while also adding several other buildings offslope including a blacksmith shop/laboratory which still exists today It wasn't until 1925 however that plans were started for constructing a shopping mall downtown adjacent to what are now fire stations #1 & #2 as well as another structure offslope housing services such as schools and churches The original conception never materialized because money didn't exist back then unlike it does now to build something like that again even though many people believed if done properly it could have been quite successful When much development did happen around here during those years mostly centered aroundRogers City annexation into more recent days unfortunately not all went according to plan due mainly because within reason developer agreement requirements were met without actually building anything rather than simply waiting for property values increase thereby increasing cost overruns etc.; one example being failure by developers who wanted access toRogers City water rights so they could build an underground reservoir instead which would have allowed water service delivery directly into their homes rather than connecting via pipeline
Bentonville's early history can be traced back to 1821, when the first permanent residents arrived in Benton County. At that time, Arkansas was part of Mexico and new settlers were brought over as part of the Mexican-American War. The war resulted in a large number of casualties on both sides, and many people fled to Bentonville in search of safety. In 1824, the first courthouse was built in Bentonville, and by 1830, it had become a major center for commerce and culture in Arkansas. By 1835, Bentonville had become an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1839-1840, the federal government set up a military post at Fort Smith in present-day Arkansas to protect trade interests along the Indian River region. The post proved unsuccessful and was abandoned two years later. In 1841-1842, Bentonville hosted an international fair which attracted attention from around the world. When it ended three months Later than planned due to bad weather conditions, it was one of the most successful events ever held in Bentonville. In 1865-1866, Bentonville played host to what is now known as the Third National Convention of American Indians (NCAIC). This event helped create national pressure against slavery and led to significant changes within American society following its conclusion.
