In 1870–71 local entrepreneurs organized a heated election campaign to name a first mayor; they chose John Sayers as their candidate but he lost to Gideon Welles who later served as Mayor from 1881 until his death in 1901. On July 17, 1893 vandals destroyed most of downtown Bentonville during renovations for Capital City Hall; however Mayor Welles responded with force by calling out volunteer firefighters against any possible vandalism which led to a 14-hour standoff that ended with no damage done On February 12th 1904 John Sayers was elected Mayor once again but this time without opposition due largely to his popular support among members of the business community who felt that he would not let politics cloud his ability to be effectiveMayor The post office moved into its current building on Main Street within months of becoming operationaland soon started receiving mail from all over Arkansas
