Bentonville, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. Bentonville is the county seat of Pulaski County. It is part of the Little Rock-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Bentonville was James Hargrave in 1827. He moved from Massachusetts and named his new community after General Andrew Jackson's home state, Missouri. The first post office in Bentonville was established on December 12, 1830, by JF Hargrave and A Price. In 1836, John Ewing opened a store and tavern called "The White Elephant" on Main Street east of what is now US Route 64/Arkansas Highway 6A (now known as Independence Road). In 1840, WN Hargrave became owner and operator of the store and tavern. The main business district around this time included four stores: Ewing's Store on Main Street east of present day US Route 64A; Price's Store on First Avenue north of Interstate 25; Hargrave's Tavern on Third Avenue west of I-25; and Brown & Company's Hotel on Second Avenue north of I-25. In 1853–1854 Governor James K Polk issued an executive order ordering all frontier posts to be destroyed or vacated because they were no longer needed for military purposes due to advancements in technology and Infantry tactics since the War Of 1812. This order caused great consternation within the military as many men who had served faithfully for many years were required to leave their commanding officers behind with nothing but a bag full of beans to support them while they moved away from an active battlefieldfrontage into territories unknown to them. As a result most leading citizens decided it would be best for them all to move out west where there would be more opportunity for education and economic opportunities than back East where President Franklin D Roosevelt had just been elected two years earlier during oneof history’s greatest surges in liberal political organizing – following passage by Congress of the Kansas–Nebraska Act which repealed laws that closed the Iowa Territory to white settlers while admitting black people into that state as well as giving land southward including much present day Arkansas territory (the so-called “Open Door” policy). So when counties like Pulaski County began electing officials other than judges or sheriffs because those positions were seen as being too close to courthouse entrances or social activities deemed important enough by voters not worth having an individual living within hearing range (in those days almost everyone had electricity), one could see farmers among the first class electors moving away from rural areas towards Bentonville becoming citizens leaders such as DrVaughn Fenton who represented District 54 until he retired in 2006 then Mrs Jane Addams who represented District 55 until she also resigned effective January 1st 2011 then current Mayor Jim Allred who has held that position since November 5th 2013 when he succeeded Mrs Addams after she won her run off election against incumbent David Hicks As mentioned before many farmers decided it would be best if they all migrated westward instead of staying put near rural areas because there would be more opportunity for education and economic opportunities than coming back East where President Franklin D Roosevelt had just been elected two years earlier during oneof history’s greatest surges in liberal political organizing – following passage by Congress of the Kansas–Nebraska Act which repealed laws that closed the Iowa Territory to white settlers while admitting black people into that state as well as giving land southward including much present day Arkansas territory (the so-called “Open Door” policy).
