It featured a long barrel with an attached stock made from hickory wood. In 1836, Colonel John Cockerill purchased land north of town and began development of what would become Fort Richardson. He wanted to create a fortification that could protect against Indian attacks and he commissioned local builder James Gamble to design the fort. The construction project took several years and when it was complete, Cockerill named the fort Fort Bowie. During World War II, Bentonville played an important role in the war effort. The city saw heavy casualties due to bombings and shelling by Japanese forces during the war – much like other locations around the country. As a result, many businesses within town were destroyed or damaged resulting in some loss of revenue for locals. However, overall, Bentonville fared relatively well during wartime operations thanks to its military-related infrastructure and population growth

Bentonville is home to Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport and the headquarters of Aflac. The area that includes Bentonville was first settled by French colonists in 1775 as part of the Louisiana Purchase from France. In 1819, the town was renamed for General Andrew Johnson after he became president of the United States. Johnson had been born in Kentucky and educated at West Point and Yale University before being elected to Congress in 1828. He soon made a name for himself as a powerful legislator and friend of President James K. Polk and Vice President Andrew Johnson. When Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, Johnson quickly responded with his characteristic bulldog determination to protect South Carolina's interests even at personal cost. By 1865, he had become one of America's most popular leaders and had won reelection four times despite strong competition from Republican candidates led by Abraham Lincoln. In January 1865, just days before his assassination by John Wilkes Booth during a campaign stop in Maryland, Johnson ordered Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant to enter Petersburg because Confederate General Robert E Lee had failed to surrender all his rebels within sight without giving up any artillery or cavalry units larger than company level (see Battle of Petersburg). This action helped solidify Grant's reputation as an effective general who could handle difficult situations while preserving order; it also demonstrated Lincoln's continuing respect for Grant despite their bitter political differences about key issues such as slavery

Although Reconstruction followed following the war, economic struggles led to political unrest culminating with Ku Klux Klan membership becoming more popular in Bentonville during this time period. Eventually white flight began leaving Bentonville for other parts of Arkansas and Tennessee beginning in 1925 while black migration increased during this time period creating tensions between these two groups that continue to this day.
