In 1848, two years after Wiley's death, Arapaho Chief Washakie gave permission for white men to live among them as part of a policy called "Trail of Tears." This event helped spur settlement by whites throughout central Arkansas following the Kansas-Nebraska Act which granted slavery status to Missouri! In 1863, during World War II, General George Custer was stationed at Camp Butler near Bentonville while commandeering supplies from Confederate forces operating along the Interstate 40 corridor northwest of Ironto Junction; his unit fought against Union troops at Battle Creek before being surrounded by retreating Confederates near Fort Smith on July 9th that year. That day thousands perished as both sides engaged in man-to-man combat; around 1/8thousand Custer's soldiers lost their lives that day alone according to official reports however unconfirmed accounts have puts the figure much higher (perhaps even up to 3 times that). A number of businesses located within or surrounding downtown Bentonville remain today: Coca Cola Bottling Works (founded 1888), American Can Service (founded 1935), First National Bank (1891), Phelps Dodge Corporation (1901), Walmart Supercenter(2002). Other notable businesses include Denny's restaurant chain (opened 1974) - one of only two restaurants open for business outside urban areas during those years - JCPenney department store - opened 1932 - Belk clothing store - opened 1985 - Dunkin' Donuts Coffee & Donuts stores across town from each other since 1978
