One of Bentonville's most famous residents was Orvil Gates (1863-1937), an American politician who served as Assistant Secretary of War under President Roosevelt and as Governor of Oklahoma from 1927 to 1937; he also founded Gates Rubber Company in 1944 which still exists today as Gates Brands Incorporated In 1892 W Fenton opened the world’s first store for dry goods in Bentonville when he set up a small store on Main Street near Depot Square In 1906 Alice Earle donated land at Depot Square for a public library which later became one of Arkansas’s leading research libraries Alice Earle also founded Arktis Pharmaceuticals which has its headquarters located in Bentonville In 1920 Rufus Howe purchased 1/2 acre at Depot Square for use as a market garden Howe became one of Bentonville’s earliest commercial farmers In 1924 he built himself a two story frame farmhouse that still stands today on West Walnut Avenue near Interstate 40

Benton and his family who were early settlers in the area. Bentonville is located on the eastern border of Hand County and north of Little Rock. The first settler in what is now Bentonville was John Silloway who arrived in 1817 from Kentucky. He built a log cabin near what is now downtown Bentonville and named it Silloway's Station. That same year, Peter Chapman came to the area from Illinois with his family and established what is now the First Baptist Church in 1819. In 1828, Jno.[sic] Ewing moved to Bentonville from Illinois with his family and opened an agricultural store which he called "Ewing's Store." He also served as Mayor of Bentonville from 1830 to 1831. In 1840, Isaac[sic] Ladd bought land east of town from Jno[sic] Ewing for $500 and beganjadgning a sawmill which would later become one of the mostsignificant landmarks in town. On July 4th, 1845, Ladd erected a large granite statue of himself at the northwest corner of Main Street and Elm Avenue (now Elm Drive). The statue has beenreplicated multiple times throughout town although some alterations have been made over time including removal of someof its original granite pieces during World War II dueto safety concerns about wartime munitions storage nearby In 1865-1866 Confederate General Jubal AyerFightin~the Battle of Batesport & Chilton Creek destroyed much adjacent property within present day Bentonvil
Bentonville was founded in 1824 as a small agricultural town on the Arkansas River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1830 it had an population of over 1,000 people. By 1850, Bentonville had become a major commercial center on the Arkansas River. The town's growth slowed after the American Civil War, but it resumed its rapid growth during Reconstruction. In the late 20th century, Bentonville experienced significant economic decline due to decreases in the quality of life and the increasing cost of living. However, recent redevelopment has brought about some revitalization efforts.
