Bentonville, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 7,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Pulaski, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bentonville is home to the University of Arkansas campus and several small businesses. The first settler in Bentonville was James A. Hardesty on January 10, 1881. He and his family founded what would become Bentonville on a tract of land that they purchased from DeKalb County commissioners for $1 per acre (0.50 hectares). Hardesty's father also settled in Bentonville in 1881. In 1912, lumberman Harry Beasley built the first house in Bentonville and started trading goods with farmers around the area. In 1974, businessmen Orson Bean and Calexico Waddell donated land to the city of North Little Rock for use as an open-air shopping mall called "Bean Promenade". The mall opened with stores such as Sears and JCPenney inside an old cotton gin located on Baxter Avenue near US Highway 62/Arkansas State Highway 361 (now Baxter Boulevard). The mall grew into one of the largest shopping complexes in central Arkansas before it closed its doors in 1992 due to economic troubles. On September 12, 1874, Bentonville was incorporated as a city by ordinance. The original population of the city was only 100 people. By 1912, the population had grown to 3,000 people. The growth in the city was due in part to oil discoveries in nearby Fort Smith and Arkadelphia. In 1913, the Arkansas Legislature voted to annex Bentonville into Arkansas.
