The name "Bentonville" originated from an Indian word meaning "the place where corn is grown." In 1824, General James Wilkinson chose this location as his new headquarters for the military occupation of Arkansas after Mobile had been sacked by Federal forces. Named for Major-General David Benton, who served as militia colonel in Wilkinson's campaign, Bentonville became one of the most important cities in south central Arkansas during Reconstruction. The post office at Bentonville was established on July 1, 1829, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 12, 1865. The first postmaster was John Hargrave. At that time there were only a few settlements around here and mail service was not available until 1851 when a road was built connecting Little Rock with what is now Conway. In 1907, two men – J W Stephenson and A L Goodrich – started a dry goods store called "Goodrich's Grocery Store". They bought out J Hargrave’s share of the business in 1909 and continued to operate it until their death in 1952; it then passed through several families before being purchased by George Snyder in 1969 and operated under his name until its closure in 1984. A large number of small businesses were located along Third Street between Randolph Boulevard and Interstate 40 before they all moved to North Little Rock when North Little Rock consolidated into the city limits in 2000 . After years of development along Randolph Boulevard from which many small businesses closed or merged into larger ones over time (including three large grocery stores), major retailing activity began taking place near Interstate 40/3rd Street between 2001-2005 when Northwest Arkansas Real Estate Group leased space east of I-40 adjacent to Claiborne Mall across from Walmart - making Bentonville one of largest shopping areas west of Memphis Tennessee
