Benton is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 6,523 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock-Central Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Benton were white men from Kentucky and Tennessee who arrived in 1849. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Arkoma River. The first post office was established in 1851, and the first store was opened in 1865. In 1870, Benton became a town when it was merged with nearby West Memphis. The city of Benton began to grow rapidly during World War II because of its proximity to military bases and its production of munitions and other materials needed by the war effort. The population peaked at 12,000 during World War II; however, it declined after the war ended and has since remained below 5,000 people. During the 1990s and 2000s, growth occurred in surrounding rural areas as businesses moved into Benton to take advantage of its tax base and infrastructure improvements made by Mayor Harry Hickey). In recent years there have been efforts to address some of the problems that have kept Benton from becoming more prosperous such as lack of businesses or housing available for sale or rent; however these efforts have yet to achieve widespread success. One major issue that has been focal point for much speculation is whether or not Mayor Hickey will run for reelection this year; given his low popularity ratings he seems likely to lose if he does run but if he does win then he may be able to address some of these issues

Benton, Arkansas is located in the Western United States and is named after General James Wilkinson Benton. The area was first settled by Native Americans, and a post office was established at Benton in 1851. In 1865, the town was renamed for Major General George H. Thomas, who had fought in the American Civil War. The city of Benton was incorporated in 1907. The population of Benton peaked at over 25,000 in 1920 and declined to around 10,000 by 1930. However, the city has since rebound and currently has a population of around 15,000. The history of Benton can be traced back to before its incorporation as a town. There were two early settlements: White Springs (now known as Arkadelphia) and Carbon Hill (now known as West Plains). These towns were built on Indian land that had been bought from the Cherokees during the 1830s by Colonel John Custer. At first, settlers only grew maize and other crops for their own use; however, when it became clear that Cherokee raids into neighboring Arkansas were continuing unabated, some residents decided to take up arms against their attackers. By 1846-47 over 50 men had joined forces with Captain William Seward to fight against Creek Indians near present day Arkadelphia; this successful campaign led to increased trade between Arkansas and Tennessee because Southern traders could now buy goods not just from Creek Chief Robert Easley but also from more militia-hardened Cherokee warriors bands which had recently defeated an Indian uprising near Cliftonville northeast of Fort Smith). In 1854 James Wilkinson Benton became governor of Missouri after Ulysses S Grant’s election as president; he relocated his family from Springfield to Arkansas Territory due to political instability within Missouri following the loss of statehood for Kansas City metropolitan area spearheaded by Andrew Johnson months earlier (see “Kansas City Metropolis boom leads region into racial division”).
