Benton, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,904 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–Fayetteville–Springdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Benton residents were a group of Methodist Episcopal missionaries who founded a small town on the east side of what is now Cottonwood Road in 1894. The settlement was named for Dr. John W. Benton, an English doctor and missionary to that region who had served in Central America and South America before coming to Arkansas as headmaster of Kirtland Academy in 1897. Benton's other early pioneers included J.P. Patterson (1872-1927), another Methodist missionary; Sallie Henson (1875-1951); Fannie Pritchett (1878-1964); and Lula Lawson (1881-1965). Benton's economy has been largely agriculture since its creation as a small community: cotton, corn, hay, potatoes, and wheat are some of the most important crops grown thereabouts. However, industry has also played an important role: over time Benton has become known for its production of aluminum cans and water tanks; it also produces paper products such as newspapers and office supplies; salt; oilseed rape; cheese; black beans; and cockroaches. In recent years there have been efforts to develop the town into a more vibrant center for commerce and culture: a library (); art galleries (); private schools (); public libraries (); various cultural events ; etc.). Benton, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 8,034 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. Benton is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metro area. Benton was founded in 1881 by John Cockerill and named for General William H. Benton, who had been instrumental in suppressing slave rebellions in Missouri and Arkansas. The first post office was established in Benton on April 15, 1881. The town was renamed Pulaski City in 1907 after World War I veteran and mayor of Tulsa Gene Pugh. In 1932, a cotton gin and other local businesses were destroyed by a fire that started while workers were cleaning up; it remains one of the most devastating fires ever to hit Benton. In 1938, construction began on what would become known as "The Ark," an $8 million research and development center for government agencies located adjacent to Prairie View A&M University (Purdue University). The project eventually led to the town's growth as an agricultural center with many large-scale manufacturing plants built there during the late 1940s and early 1950s employing over 100% African American labor. In 1966, Benton became home to its first high school when Central High School opened on land donated by Mrs. Mabel Riddleberger Addison (1886-1964). In 1978, Community College Southeast opened its doors in downtown Benton after years of planning and fundraising efforts by community groups including Habitat for HumanityArkansas In 1984-1985 several streetscape changes were made throughout Benton with new sidewalks and driveways; these improvements were later followed up with a renovation which included new roofs, flashinglights along some Streetscapes., central street re- branching into two separate arterial streets called Main Street/University Avenue & State Street/Jefferson Boulevard) After major reconstruction went into full swing beginning around 20000 square feet or more various stores closed their doors due mostly to lack of business since no one wanted to open next door because there have been numerous robberies targeting small businesses within walking distance like beauty salons etc... Stuarts Hardware closed all but four locations across three states before finally closing shop permanently effective 12 Dec 2009 due primarily to increased competition from big box stores such as Walmart
