The first person in Benton was Jack O'Neill who relocated from New York in 1871. He built his first store there in 1872 and started trading goods with Native Americans and other settlers in what is now Benton County. In 1876, he married Alice Goodnight and began operating a general store on Main Street called "The Gables". They had four children: Mabel (1877-1948), Homer (1879-1964), Alice (born 1880), and Vernon (born 1883). In 1903, Vernon bought out his father's interest in the business and renamed it "The Gables". He continued to operate it until his death in 1964. His wife Alice also operated it until her death in 1948. After her death, The Gables became known as "Alice's Place" which still stands today as a familyowned business serving local residents since 1951. In 1919, C H Barnett opened a meat market east of town on State Highway 8 near present day Arkadelphia Road/Arkadelphia Boulevard. This market remained open until 1984 when it closed due to concerns about communicable diseases among livestock handlers who then moved their operations to nearby Robinsonville where they continue to sell their products today under the name of Robinson's Market Incorporated

Benton was founded in 1881 and named for General Nathaniel Benton, who served as U.S. Army Governor of Arkansas from 1877 to 1880 and as military commander during Reconstruction in the South. The post office here first opened in 1885. Benton is located onArkansas Highway 165 south of Interstate 30 and east of Rogers Road. The Post Office Department reported that the first post office here open on November 3, 1885 mail service arrived from Carthage Springs with three bags of mail (the first built by local men). Shortly thereafter, one hundred citizens applied for township status which they received on October 15th, 1886 A group of five men organized what became the First Baptist Church in 1888 and it has been held there ever since despite numerous other churches being proposed or built over time including a hospital (built 1911) In 1911 a new high school was constructed north of town center called North Little Rock High School which remains active today as well Two years later a general store/cafeteria was built across from the high school and it continued serving students into the 1990s before closing down due to lack of patronage In 2002 an addition to North Little Rock High Schoolwas dedicated which included an East-West Ballroom/Dancehall capable of seating up to 500 people Today Benton still relies heavily on its educational institutions with both North Little Rock High Schooland Benton Middle School continuing to offer classes through 8th grade while also having various extracurricular activities such as theatre programs and varsity sports teams
