Benton is the largest city in Pulaski County and home to the Arkansas State Capitol. The first permanent settler in Benton was Levi Coffin in 1820. In 1830, John Tipton founded a log cabin on what is now town square. A post office was established at Benton in 1836, and remained open until 1907. The first store opened in Benton by J.F. Barnes closed its doors on October 1, 1907 after serving for ten years. In 1859, Wm Henson donated land to build an academy as part of a larger donation from his estate to Pulaski County and the state of Arkansas. The school district that would later be called Benton Elementary School was organized on November 15th 1861 with Wm Henson as superintendent and $5 per pupil subscribed from each household of settlers within three miles of the new school site west of present-day downtown Benton (later named "Henderson"). This initial school had just forty students but it quickly became one of the most popular schools in town with grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade becoming available starting on February 17th 1863 when Mr Sidney Goode donated his two large barns east of Main Street which were used for classrooms and other facilities until they burned down in 1901; during this time period Mrs Goode also managed the grocery store across from Henderson's farm house which served as both schoolhouse and farmstead until 1916 when it too burned down due to lack of care by Mrs Goode who had passed away several years earlier! On July 14th 1865 local men under Capt Wm Purdy arrived with 4 cannon dragged overland from Fayetteville via Pryor’s Mill Ruins where they were stored while Maj Gen Forrest built Fort Smith; upon their arrival local women gathered around them cooking dinner while Capt Purdy gave a speech announcing that “this is not only our first attack against any nation since Independence but we will do everything possible to make sure that such attacks never happen again” – now known as "Purdy's Speech" Fifty six volunteer soldiers (forty five white men including two officers) formed into Companies C & D under Capt Purdy led by Col George Wortham who happened to be thereabouts filling up food supplies for Ft Smith before he left for Memphis
