Benton is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–south Little Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. Benton was named after General Joseph E. Benton, an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War who died in 1865 while leading a cavalry charge against Confederate forces near Fort Smith, Arkansas. The first post office in Benton was established on February 14, 1864, and operated until April 15, 1865. The first settler in what would become Benton was James Salyer, who arrived there on December 3, 1859. He founded a log cabin and called it "Salyersville." Around 1860 or 1861 Jno. McMurtry settled here also and called his place "McMurtry's Prairie". In 1868 John Witherspoon opened a wagon shop and store at what is now corner of Elm and First Streets. In 1870 he married Martha Ladd (daughter of Major Elijah Ladd) and moved from his home on Spring Street to this location where he erected a store with three stories which he continued to operate until his death in 1907. In 1902 Phebe Stevenson opened her first grocery store at this site selling groceries direct to consumers from local farmers' yards; it remained open until 1978 when it closed due to competition from larger stores within Reach Market Inc., which became Arkansas' second largest grocery chain after Fayetteville Grocery Co-op later that year). A post office building constructed by Phebe Stevenson remains extant on Main Street today as the property's only surviving structure dating back to that era; its original two-story brick structure featured elaborate stuccowork by noted Arkansas architect Alfred Burchfield (1857-1925). Benton has experienced several waves of immigration over its history: primarily Germans (many of whom had returned home following World War I); Irish Catholics fleeing famine conditions throughout Ireland; Italians settling shortly after World War II due to wartime opportunities; Poles moving into areas adjacent toWarsaw being victimized by Nazi persecution prior to their arrival in 1944 - many of whom were forced into slave labor camps during the war effort under sanctioning by Ulysses S Grant ; Japanese Americans incarcerated during wartime Relocation Centers located throughout central Arkansas capable of holding up to 50% of all Japanese Americans living within its boundaries - most notably Shigaoka Dam Memorial Park located just north of town off Highway 160 between Hwy 183/Pulaski County Line Road/Arkansas Stateline Rd./Shigaoka Dam Bridge Rd.; Dutch Canadians arriving clandestinely aboard ships transported across Lake Huron en route from Holland proper during early 1950s although no formal documentation exists confirming their presence in Benton despite numerous complaints received by local officials . As one might expect given its diverse origins, current demographics suggest that African Americans make up about 40% of Benton's population while Hispanics account for 30%, Asians make up 10%, thenceforth comprising 5%of total population according Stateswide representation - making it one of less than half dozen towns palpably majority Asian outside major cities .
