Ammunition production began soon after with primitive methods such as hand cannonball firing through brushy areas which created sawdust that filled up barrels." With World War I raging around them National Armory Hornets turned out shellshells at record rates then stopped because President Wilson ordered naval officers not to purchase munitions because he felt their use could end up helping Germany

Benton, Arkansas is a small community located in Fayette County, Arkansas. It was founded in 1881 and named for Colonel George Benton, a United States Army officer who served in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. The population of Benton as of the 2010 census was 1,814. As one of the poorest communities in Fayette County, it has been difficult to maintain its social fabric over time. However, recent efforts by residents have brought some improvement to local conditions. Located on the banks of the Little Rock River, Benton is an agricultural town with a population of approximately 2,000 people. The town rests on the junction of two main roads that connect other nearby towns and provide access to transportation and goods necessary for life in rural Fayette County. The town's only industry is agriculture; however, it also produces cornmeal and flour for local use and sells some products locally at local farmers' markets. Benton was organized as a village on December 12, 1881 by order of Governor John A. Johnston from territory taken from Pulaski County during the Texas Revolution. That same year saw another important milestone in its history: when members of the Methodist Episcopal Church becameorganized into what would become known asthe "First Methodist Church" congregation in Benton (later renamed First Baptist Church). The first post office opened at Benton on January 15th, 1882; however, mail delivery did not commence until May 6th due to difficulties obtaining horses to carry letters between Boonville (now Fayetteville) and Benton. By 1886 there were five businesses operating within the limits of present-day Benton: cotton gin (1886), general store (1887), bakery (1889), livery stable (1892) and blacksmith shop (1893). In 1899 there were six businesses operating within present-dayFayetteville: grocery store(1901), hardware store(1902), dentist office(1903), laundry house(1904), restaurant(1905)and bank.(1906). This period saw growth for both Benton alsoprovince as well as neighboring counties; according to statistics compiled by Webster University from 1922 through 1928 each county had an increase in population from 1% to 7%. This growth led most likely due –among others–to increased migration activities prompted by job opportunities available throughout Great Plains areas following World War I expansionism across America which included Arkansas annexation into states such as Oklahoma Territory[2]. These new opportunities led many Arkansans out westward seeking economic stability following years of drought[3] while also increasing social ties among individuals living near each other.–In addition jobs created outsideofArkansas allowed more contact between citizens –particularly those residing near large cities like Dallas or St Louis.–leading eventuallyto formationof civic organizations within these regions including those found withinFayetteville such asthe Police Athletic League which promoted physical activity among youth,[4][5] Boys Country Club which offered recreational activities such as hunting[6],and Rotary Clubs which provided social services suchas nutrition classes/pets for children
