Scope mounts were a type of mounting device used to attach rifles, shotguns and other firearms to armories, churches and other buildings. Scope mounts were first developed in the early 1800s by Captain John Brownell of the United States Army. In 1892, Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer purchased a pair of scope mounts from Capt. Brownell for his rifle company, The Buffalo Soldiers. These mounts became known as "Custer's standard". The first use of scope mounts on an American battlefield was during the Mexican-American War when General Santa Anna attached a pair of mount onto his artillery battery at Yuma River Bridge in Arizona on October 22, 1846. At Camp Bowie near Lexington Texas on November 1-2,1846 American infantryman Samuel Colt attached a Lee Model 6Shooter to one of his cannons while under fire from Mexican forces at Cerro Gordo Pass. A similar mounted gun was used by Major General Winfield Scott at Palo Alto Heights on February 14th,1847 during the Battle of Palo Alto which resulted in Scott's successful victory over Mexico

It lies on the Arkansas River and is named after Bella Vita, an Italian girl who died in a wagon accident in 1856. The first settlers arrived in what is now Bella Vista around 1875. In 1916, a post office was established in Bella Vista and it functioned until it was discontinued in 1978. However, the town has continued to grow since then and by 1990, its population had reached 2,000 people. Today, many of the businesses that once thrived in Bella Vista have either closed or are no longer operational due to changes within the local economy. Nevertheless, there are still some businesses that remain active such as Black Diamond dressmakers which took over from another business that went out of business; also remaining active is The Best Western Hotel which offers rooms for rent as well as meeting spaces for various events. In addition to its businesses and residents, Bella Vista has also become known for its annual Fourth of July parade which attracts thousands of onlookers each year!
