The first settlement in what is now Bella Vista was made by citizens of Quincy on the east side of Arkansas River in 1853. The name "Bella Vista" was given to it by General John Custer as he and his troops passed through the area on their way to Fort Smith, Oklahoma. The town site was platted in 1865 by Jno. Fenton and Lewis Purdy, who named it for Bella Vittoria (now Bella Italy), an Italian princess who had been instrumental in helping to found Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The first store was built in 1867 by George Waring and operated until 1870 when it burned down. A second store was built near the present day post office in 1871 by Hiram Hargrave and operated until 1886 when it also burned down. In 1896, a school house was built which served as a community center until 1955 when it too burned down; this building still stands today as a private residence. In 1907, Jasper Sayers opened a general store that became one of the most successful businesses within Bella Vista until its closure in 1978 due to economic problems caused by deregulation of local business practices.. In 1909 two schools were established: one for boys and one for girls which remain operational today as both public schools within the limits of Bellavia Township government while also serving as homeschooling options for students from nearby neighborhoods including North Little Rock suburbia...the first post office opened at BelleVista on July 3rd 1912 with Elisha Bingham as clerk...the last mail delivery occurred on December 15th 1951 after many years service with Mrs Addie Burchfield...A new courthouse replaced the original courthouse destroyed during World War II which stood across from White's grocery Store on Main Street since that time remains an important landmark within Bella Vista
