It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–various small towns and villages area. The name "Bella Vista" comes from Bella being Spanish for "beautifulview." The first settlers in what would become Bella Vista were Major John M. Fields and his family who arrived around 1881. They erected a log cabin on the banks of the White River opposite present day Mountain View Elementary School. A post office was established in 1884, and by 1886 it had developed into a small town with a store, blacksmith shop, and two churches: one Methodist and one Baptist. In 1907 Alice Crouch opened her first grocery store in what is now known as the downtown district of Bella Vista. She became well-known for her delicious pies which are still popular to this day (and can be found at most local restaurants). By 1911 there were six businesses in town including three stores, two hotels/motels, a bank branch (the first in Arkansas), four residences (two single-family homes and two duplexes), one garage/workshop/garage conversions built by young men working on their farms during World War I; an agricultural elevator; two schools - Mountain View Elementary School which served grades K-5 until 1955 when it closed due to lack of students; and Mrs. Crouch's Academy which opened in 1912 as an all-girls high school but soon transitioned into an all-boys high school afterMrs. Crouch retired from teaching). In 1924 Edward Jukes organized the first All American Football League team called 'Pulaski Tigers' that played against teams from other states such as Missouri City (now Kansas City) before disbanding because they could not pay their players dues . In 1951 Stapler Field replaced Alice Crouch's grocery store as home field for Pulaski High School football games until it was destroyed by fire in 1972 . A post office operated at Bella Vista from 1884 through 1957; however no mail reached residents because mail service started upriver only about half way upriver to Jonesboro then stopped entirely due to construction projects on Main Street between Clarksville and West Memphis . In 1951 Staple Field replaced Alice Crouch's grocery store as home field for Pulaski High School football games until it was destroyed by fire in 1972 . On July 1st 1899 sixty acres of land comprising present day Bella Vista Township lands east of US Highway 71 were patented to Gertrude Pritchett Forrester under patent number 5671 & 6362 inclusive & 7359 inclusive etc., all being named after her late husband Capt James Witherspoon Forrester having been born October 25th 1796 at Clarendon House near LiverpoolON Trent Valley England while Lt Colonel George Washington Forrest Commanding Brigade North Western Australia Volunteers Army Corps Of Engineers & General Order No 9 dated 10th November 1865 issueanted pursuant thereto From thenceforth known also as just forrest or FORRESTER’S FARMstead or simply FORRESTER’S LANDES you will have perpetual use thereof subject always tosuch regulations & limitations prescribed therein [emphasis added]'. Bella Vista, Arkansas was founded in 1881 by a group of wagon drivers. The first white settler in the area was Ebenezer Higginbotham, who arrived in 1881. He and his family built a cabin on the edge of what is now known as Alice Springs. By 1886, the population of Bella Vista had grown to 12 people. In 1912, Bella Vista became a city and was renamed after President John F. Kennedy's birthplace, Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. In 1935, the United States Postal Service moved its post office from Alice Springs to Bella Vista because it was more efficient and cost-effective to do so. The City Council voted in 1936 to build a Municipal Court Building; construction began that year and the building opened in 1937. From 1951 until 1985, Bella Vista was home to The United Methodist Church (UMC). It relocated from Arkadelphia, Arkansas when that city became an independent municipality within Arkansas state government.
