Arkadelphia, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 9,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–Fayetteville–Arlington, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Arkadelphia" comes from the Cherokee word ართული meaning "place where deer abound." The first sawmill in Arkadelphia was built by James Temple and David Pryor on the White River in 1820. Arkadelphia became aetta (a small town) in 1869 when it was annexed by Pulaski County. The first post office in Arkadelphia was established in 1868. In 1907, the portion of Arkadelphia lying east of State Highway 4 opened to white settlement. A cotton gin and mill were built there soon after and made Arkadelphia one of the most important cotton-growing towns within Arkansas. The economy of Arkadelphia has changed many times over its history; agriculture has been its mainstay since early days but with recent reductions in production due to weather changes and other factors, manufacturing now makes up a significant percentage of town's economy as well. Industries which have operated here include textiles, plastics and fabricated metals products; trucking services are also common here as well as restaurants and bars catering to a wide variety of tastes across all age groups while also providing service for local schools through community involvement projects such as giving backpacks to students at lunchtime or making donations to various charities throughout the year

In 1861, when Confederate General Robert Ewell sacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina and beganthe Civil War, he moved his army past Arkadelphia on their way to Selma Alabama where they were to cross the river and join General Union troops fighting against slavery

It has been the capital of Pulaski County since 1907. Arkadelphia is part of the Little Rock–Rogersville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Arkadelphia goes back to 1871 when George H. Black and his family came to Arkansas from Georgia with their children, who were then four years old. black built a log cabin on what is now State Street in present-day Arkadelphia and named it "Arkansas". He soon realized that he could not build a permanent home there and so he started moving his family around until they finally settled in what is now rural Pulaski County, south of present-day Little Rock. The first post office in Arkadelphia was established on February 17, 1872, under the name "Harpers Ferry". However, because no one wanted to pioneer this area further than what they had already done, the name "Arkadelphia" (a word meaning "prominence") stuck and became official as early as 1897 when it was changed to its current form of "Pulaski County". In 1907, after many hard struggles through political boycotts by some local citizens over financial issues brought about by World War Iilitoils within town limits, Pulaski County's first court house (still standing)was completed thanks to donations from local business owners seeking an end to double taxation within their community during that difficult time period for all those involved - black included! In 1920 a new courthouse replaced the old one which had been destroyed by fire just two years earlier while still being used as a jail; Judge J C White officiated at the dedication ceremony! By 1930 there were only three residents left in Arkadelphia - David Blease (the last resident), Mrs Gail Overstreet and Orrin Dickey - but despite this fact county officials decided that it would be best if all future services for the town were moved out into neighboring Rogersville so that people would have less contact with each other locally which led to somewhat declined enrollment rates for high school classes until 1970 when state/provincial programs targeted more rural areas resulted in increased enrollment opportunities throughout Arkansas!
