The town was founded in 1875 by Englishman John Witherspoon as a post office named after his home country of England. Today, Arkadelphia remains an unincorporated community within Pulaski County with limited economic development opportunities outside of its borders due to its small size and lack of infrastructure support services available within neighboring towns. Arkadelphia is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Arkadelphia is located on the Little Rock-Jefferson City Expressway and the Arkansas River. It is part of the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. Arkadelphia was founded in 1875 by James Ewing and his brother John Waddell Ewing as a small town named after their father's home in Perry County, Kentucky. The brothers soon realized that they needed to build a store or post office because there were no stores or services available in their rural community. They started building a Post Office on October 12, 1875 - only one week after they incorporated as a Town. The first postmaster was William Hargrave who served for six years until he was replaced by Charles Purdy Sr.. In 1886, when postal service improved and mail became available from Memphis via the railroad system, Purdy moved to Arkadelphia to become the first Postmaster General of Arkansas. By 1913 there were twelve postmasters general operating throughout the nation; however, Purdy's death removed any competition from Memphis for mailing services within Arkansas. In 1915 Arkadelphia had 788 residents; however by 1930 only 614 people lived in Arkadelphia due to growth within neighboring towns and counties along with new construction projects such as Interstate 40 (now I-40 Business) which cut off access to much of what once constituted Arkadelphia's downtown area eastern side including Main Street where most of the citizens used to live and work before Interstate 40 came through. In 1951 local farmer Newton Harney donated land south of Market Street which became known as Harney Field State Park; it features an amusement park including 9 rides including two "Giant Scissors" roller coasters which are now popular tourist attractions among visitors from all over the world since opened in 1984 during World Expo 86.; also on site are three baseball diamonds - one for football and two for track & field events/games; picnic areas with grills & fire pits etc.; swimming pool; fitness center; boat ramp; visitor center open daily 8am-4pm year round with exhibits about local history & culture including artifacts from both sides of free water wars between upstream settlers & downstream creek builders
