Arkadelphia is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 30,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. As of the 2000 census, Arkadelphia had a population of 24,653. The first people to live in what is now Arkadelphia were the Caddo and Wichita Indians who called it "Ajax". In 1801, General Andrew Jackson's army destroyed the Ajax village and burned all its buildings. This event is known as the Battle of Ajax which marked the beginning of Arkansas Territory. In 1819, John Chilton purchased land in present-day Arkadelphia from Chief Pontotoc. Chilton founded what would become known as Chilton Station on Tennessee River near present-day Springfield, Illinois. By 1830, he had laid out a town site on stagecoach road between White Hall and Springdale with three stores and twenty families living there. The first post office was established in 1832 under the name Indianola (now Little Rock). The name changed to Arkadelphia in 1839 because that was where Major General William Jellico built his fortification during Mexico's War (1846-48). In 1840, James Fenton built an cotton gin on his farm west of town while others started planting crops around town in 1840 also including Wofford & Co., a mercantile business begun by Joshua view Woodruff in 1798; Gentry Bros., undertakers; Henson & Sons', jewelers; Henson's Lumber Company - later renamed Williams Lumber Company - men who mined coal for local stockholders until 1861 when production ended due to increased competition from wolframite mining operations outside ofArkadelphia; Jourdan Coal Mines - opened 1911 by Captured Frenchman #2 Jourdan alias Frenchy Jones with employees including future Arkansas Governor Pappy Teller - coal were used for manufacturing brickbats and other items until 1921 when production stopped due to overloading resulting from new laws regarding surface coal mining The area that now forms part of Arkadelphia was settled primarily by African Americans who worked as sharecroppers during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. At first many black residents lived along Georgia Avenue which runs through downtown today while more recent arrivals concentrated along Race Street just east of First National Bank building which served as their community center from 1865 until 1945 when it burnt down due to arson attempt by white students attending nearby Whitesburg High School across Whitehall Road from today’s Walmart store next door which opened in 1978 adjacent to current day Arkin Elementary School located one block south on Whitehall Road opposite current day ARKIN Middle School closed effective 5th grade 2019 after years long struggle with poverty/neglect

The city became a U.S. military post in 1865 and since then has been home to numerous federal government agencies including the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). In 2003, Arkadelphia was chosen as one of 20 finalists for "America's Fastest Growing Cities".
