Arkadelphia is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 5,924 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–Fayetteville–Springdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Arkadelphia goes back to 1875 when it was founded as a trading post by James Waddell and his brother-in-law, John Tipton. The town grew up around the Arkadelphia Arsenal, which produced artillery ammunition during the American Civil War. In 1865, Arkadelphia became an independent city and remains so today. The first settlers in what is now Arkadelphia were farmers who arrived in 1875 from Illinois. They built a log cabin on the site of present day Arkadelphia Arsenal and began to trade with Native Americans for goods such as corn and tobacco. In 1886, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his army through Pulaski County and occupied various towns including Arkadelphia before finally settling in Fort Smith, Arkansas in 1888. When he left Arkansas for good in 1892, many of the original farming families followed him into poverty. However, over time some new families developed around the arsenal where they stored food and manufactured goods for local customers until it closed its doors for good in 1984 due to financial difficulties caused by inflationary pressures within the munitions industry throughout much of America at that time[1]. In 1925,[2] three brothers – Harvey Minton (founder of Hormel Foods), Jay Minton (founder of Jenson Vining meatpacking company) and Don English (founder of English Bros BBQ) – bought 1,500 acres north of present day Arkadelphia on White Sands Lake after purchasing land from Colonel Frank Aiken Jr., who had been commissioned to develop this area by President Calvin Coolidge.[3] With this purchase they laid down rules that would govern future development within their new community: “No buildings higher than sixty feet without proper permits”; “All streets must be two or four blocks long”; “All machines must be put into use immediately”; “No stocks or bonds shall be sold but through open market transactions only”[4]; these regulations remain in place to this day[5]. On December 11th, 1927,[6] Harvey Minton married his childhood sweetheart Nannie Mae Stephenson at First Baptist Church located just east of downtown Arkadelphia[7]. She was also one half owner with him with her parents owning about 50% interest together until 1951 when she sold all her shares back to him share-for-share basis[8]. On July 2nd 1932,[9] Don English married Elsie Henderson at Second Baptist Church located across from Gadsden State Bank on Main Street adjacent to ARK headquarters still standing today! Their daughter Lois was born on October 10th 1934 at 12:30pm while their son Donnie was born on November 6th 1935 just minutes after midnight! This wedding marks not only their marriage but also their first child together since moving into their current home which they purchased shortly thereafter!
