Arkadelphia is home to The University of Arkansas at Arkadelphia (UAR), one of the largest universities in Arkansas. The school offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs as well as several professional degrees. The first settlers in what is now Arkadelphia were two families from Kentucky: John Brown and his wife Margaret; John Carter and his wife Sally; George Washington Smith and his wife Elizabeth. On December 14, 1824, a group of fourteen men set out from Bardstown, Kentucky for what they thought would be an easy journey overland to new land that lay east of the Mississippi River. However, their journey became more difficult with every mile they traveled. They finally arrived at what is now Arkadelphia on May 3, 1824. The town site had been chosen because it was close to water supplies and could support a small community without becoming too swampy or muddy for wagons to travel through easily. At first there were only six people living in Arkadelphia: four men who farmed land around the town site and two women who raised chickens and hogs on their property outside of town limits. By 1830 there were ten residents living in Arkadelphia proper – seven men and three women who worked on farms within walking distance of each other. The growth of Arkadelphia began slowly but surely after 1828 when a post office was established in the town by Wm Hargrave Sr., one of the original settlers in what is now Arkadelphia. By 1840 there were twenty-four postal patrons living in Arkeleytown – eleven men and thirteen women engaged either directly or indirectly in agricultural production or commerce within walking distance of each other. In 1850 three more houses had been erected within Arkeleytown limits – all by local farmers who wanted to provide additional housing for their workers during hard times caused bythe Panic Of 1849 which struck hardest near Memphis during that time period Famine also hit much closer to home with widespread effects throughout central Arkansas This put increased demand on goods available locally as well as increasing prices for goods exported away from central Arkansas making life difficult even for those lucky enough to have roots into this growing community Late 1800s saw manyArkansas cotton fields close due primarilyto lackof labor
Arkadelphia is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,974 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Port Huron, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Arkadelphia was David Hartsfield from Boston, Massachusetts in 1836. In 1839 he married Sarah Pendleton and they moved to what is now Arkadelphia from Jacksonville, Florida. They had six children: four sons and two daughters. Hartsfield also operated a flour mill in Arkadelphia for many years before moving it to Cheneyville, Missouri in 1909. In 1868 Samuel Fenton purchased land east of the town site from John Tipton for $5 per acre (the current location of Walmart). He built a frame house on this property which still stands today and is known as the "Fenton House". Fenton later sold his land to James A Cline who built a gristmill there that still operates today. Rufus Mclntyre started living in Arkadelphia in 1865 with his family when he left Illinois to become an overland wagon driver for the US Army during World War I. After the war Mclntyre founded what is now Cline's Drug Store here which opened its doors on November 12th 1865 (). McLntyre served as Mayor of Arkadelphia from 1903-1905 and again from 1907-1909; he was also Gradeschool Superintendent here between 1908-1910 (). The first post office in Arkadelphia was established on October 25th 1861 by Jno Dillard (). This office closed on December 15th 1861 due to high volume demand(). On July 1st 1863 Union General John C Stroud arrived at Fort Smith with 5,000 soldiers and began preparations for an assault on Arkansas City which would eventually lead to Confederate victory over Union forces at Battle of Corinth January 7th 1865 (). As part of this attack General Stroud burned down most of downtownArkansas City including the courthouse where local citizens had gathered to celebrate his success earlier that day (). The building which still stands today across Main Street from Covenant Methodist Church (now used as a convenience store) was among these buildings destroyed during this raid.
