The first people to live in what is now Arkadelphia were Creeks who migrated from central Texas about 1805. They built an earthwork fort on the bank of the White River and named it Fort Creek after their own creek that flowed through their land. The Creeks arrived during a time when most southern Arkansas was still wilderness and there was no government or trade center established hereabouts. The first white settlers in what is now Arkadelphia were James Hargrave and his brother Hugh Hargrave, who came from Virginia about 1824 as farmers seeking a new home for themselves and their families. They purchased two square miles (4 km2) of territory around present-day Arkadelphia from John Auld, Sr., one of the original Cherokees who had been forced to cross overland from Tennessee to central Arkansas by General Andrew Jackson during the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The Hargrave family continued to reside here until they soldán lot near Boston Avenue (now Nellis Street) east of downtown to Gideon Weller in 1848 and then bought another lot near First Avenue (now White Avenue) north of town in 1850. A post office called Arkadelphia was established in 1837, but remained open only for a brief period because local citizens did not want mail delivered to them directly from Nashville, Tennessee because that would have involved paying transportation costs! The first schoolhouse in what is now Arkadelphia was built about 1840 by George Prentice Jr., one of several founders of Pulaski County schools which soon became nationally renowned for their excellence! In 1860 Drury Academy opened its doors as the first public school west of Memphis! Arkansas State University began operations here on October 15, 1912 as Roosevelt College with instruction offered solely through correspondence courses! In 1938 it became known as Little Rock State Teachers College; later it changed its name again to Arkansas State University—Little Rock; finally it became Arkansas State University—Pulaski School District on January 1, 1974 following passage by the state legislature thereof authorizing consolidation among all three campuses within the newly created Pulaski School District! On July 1, 1981 all three campuses united under one roof creating what we know today as Arkansas State University—Arkansas Delta! Arkadelphia has experienced many changes throughout its history including: growth due principally to waves of immigrants streaming into this agricultural region during both world wars (1918-1945), economic hard times following World War II (1946-1972), rapid growth following statehood (1974-present), fluctuating population levels resulting from natural ones such as hurricanes Katrina/ Rita (2005-2009) and Hugo Chavez’s Venezuelan bolívar described herein as “the Edgar Allan Poe carbonated water” given that much property has been taken off market value since then; however Local Business Owners always manage these changes keeping our economy strong while providing quality services which include education & health care

Arkadelphia is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Pulaski County and the second-largest municipality in Arkansas after Little Rock. The metropolitan area of Arkadelphia has a population of 18,813 as of 2009. The first settlers to what is now Arkadelphia were white men from Kentucky who called it "the land of the bluegrass." They arrived around 1812 and platted what would become Arkadelphia on May 8, 1816. In 1824, General John C. Frémont surveyed and named this town for his friend and mentor, Major General Andrew Jackson's army general brother-in-law Archibald McAllister Arkwright. AfterArkwright's death in 1830, his widow became the town's first Female Mayor under Arkansas statehood in 1865. In 1870, when Arkansas became a U.S. state, President Ulysses S Grant chose to move the main government center from Little Rock to Fort Smith so that more central representation could be had throughout the territory during Reconstruction efforts following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation%. He also chose Arkadelphia as one of four cities within Red River Valley which would serve as nuclei for new rural areas formed during that time period by resettling freedmen following Reconstruction south of the river (the others being Tupelo ( Mississippi) and Joplin ( Missouri)). Arkansas' new capital moved into its permanent home on November 4, 1912 when Governor Claiborne Pell announced that Little Rock would no longer be its official City Center due to its high cost of living and lack of infrastructure compared to other larger municipalities throughout Arkansas'. The new capitol building was designed by noted American architect Edward Huttonwick with its Hellenic Revival features based upon plans provided by Philadelphia builder Augustus Saint Louis Fenton Jr.. At 1 million square feet (1002 m²), it was then one of America’s largest capitols ever built until surpassed by Washington D.C.'s National Mall in 1966 with 1 million square feet (1002 m²) dedicated to office space alone!
