It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–South Little Rock, AR metropolitan statistical area. Arkadelphia is home to the Arkansas State Capitol and the Pulaski County Courthouse. The first inhabitants of what is now Arkadelphia were Arapaho Indians. They ranched on the land until 1819 when it was granted to David Dixon for his ill-fated expedition against the Osage Nation near Fort Gibson. In 1827, Dixon sold 2,000 acre (8 km2) section of land east of present day Arkadelphia to Elijah White for $4 per acre ($ in 2018). In 1868, John Fenton purchased 640 acres (241 ha) from David Dixon and developed it into a town called Fentonville which had a post office and two stores. Some people thought that this name might be derived from French "fort" meaning "place". A group of men led by Cushman Wagoner moved to Arkadelphia in 1870 and named it after themselves - Wagoner City or Wagonerville as reported by historian Edwin Northrup Chambers in "The History of Arkansas: Volume 3" In 1902, local banker Amos Henson donated 1 block (or .8 acres) north of present day Main Street to become known as Henson Park after himself and his wife Amanda Mapes Henson who was then vice president of First National Bank located in Little Rock at that time. The park's namesake can still be seen today just south of US Highway 95 between Elm Avenue and Third Street across from the old Kmart store which closed down in 2007 but has been preserved as an attraction with interpretive signs describing its history since then.
