As one of only two towns in Faulkner County not to be annexed into Jackson or Little Rock counties during its early years, Arkadelphia attracted a mix of farmers and traders who developed what is now known as downtown Arkadelphia into an important commercial center for eastern Arkansas. The town's growth continued until World War II when many local businesses were destroyed by fires or left vacant because of wartime military activity that diverted economic investment fromArklingtonians. Most notably, the Arbuckle chemical plant operated out of Arkadelphia from 1941-1945 and employed over 1,000 people; however this plant never reopened after it was bombed during World War II. In 1882, they erected a log cabin on what is now First Street in Arkadelphia as their first business venture. The couple continued to operate their businesses until 1889 when they sold all their property except for one hundred acres along the Arkansas River which they leased back to Nicholas Morton for 99 years at $1 per acre (approximately $ ).
