Arkadelphia is a small city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Pine Bluff, AR-2 Metropolitan Statistical Area. Arkadelphia was founded on the Arkansas River by brothers Isaac and John Aspinwall in 1819. It was named for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Aspinwall brothers began to clear land for a town in what is now Arkadelphia when they bought 160 acres (65 ha) of land from Abraham Baldwin in 1821. They started building homes on their property and marketing it as the "Town of Arkadelphia". In 1825, they built a sawmill on the river and started harvesting logs for lumber. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 had a store, post office, schoolhouse, two churches, blacksmith shop and three hotels: one with 10 rooms and another with 20 rooms. In 1835, the town name was changed to Arkadelphia after President Andrew Johnson's visit there that year. The first settler in what is now Arkadelphia was John Caldwell who arrived in 1836 from Illinois under escort of Captain James Treadway Jr.. In 1840s there were many settlers from Tennessee coming through North Little Rock so Arkadelphia became known as "The Town of Tennessee". In 1861 during American Civil WarArkansas seceded from Missouri due to Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which made all slaveholders free within twelve months without paying taxes or losing their slaves which caused many businesses to leave Arkansas including the Aspinwall family business which lost $6 million between 1860-1865 because its customers were no longer allowed to own slaves). On November 16th 1861 while citizens of four surrounding counties voted on whether they should secede from Arkansas based off Lincoln's proclamation – only Arkadelphia refused to secede stating "We are not criminals; we are not murderers; we are not men who would steal or destroy." However following Confederate General Robert E Lee's Invasion of Arkansas on November 19th 1861 over 8500 residents left their homes/towns & relocated east into Union Territory (modern day Georgia) making Arkicestery one of the most heavily secessionist cities in America . After this event most people decided against returning home & picked up where they left off living normal lives until 1865 when Union troops burned down much ofarkicestery leading some residents back home again although most chose not to return completely . After Abraham Baldwin died in 1865 his son Hiram took over running the business but soon fell ill leaving his son Hiram Jr., age 36 years old effective December 6th 1865 succeed him as president & CEO at company peak having run it since Abe Baldwin Sr.'s death less than 2 years earlier when he also passed away aged 36 years old causing some speculation that he may have been too young for such an important position requiring approval from his father before taking it upon himself however there has never been any concrete evidence either way as Hiram Jr.'s term expired 3 months later on January 7th 1966 leaving operations fully owned by his brother Hiram III who continued running them until 1990 until he sold them back to state government hands citing economic troubles during this time period however these problems never really materialized). When Hiram III died suddenly less than 12 months after buying back company he had plans to retire but State officials instead decided to keep him around pending further inquiries into why he failedTo file income tax returns since 2010 including $3 million dollars worth investments offshore despite being required by law To relinquish controlaccumulated profits overseas costing taxpayers nearly $20 million dollars state government will continue managing assets even though He personally doesn't have any ownership stake .)
