The original school building, which had been built around 1900, was destroyed in a fire that year. A new building was constructed and dedicated on November 14, 1930. In 1951, Arkadelphia annexing North Little ROCK completely; this event led to its current name of "Arkadelphia". In 1960, construction began on the current high school campus and it opened in 1962; today it is known as Appalachian High School

Arkadelphia is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,946 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. Arkadelphia was platted in 1877 by J.P. Stephenson and Wm. Henson and named for General Lafayette Hinton Arkwright of Indiana, who had come to Arkansas as a surveyor in 1867. The first post office was opened in Arkadelphia on April 4, 1879 by J.B. White and named for General Hinton Arkwright's home state of Illinois; it closed on December 20, 1886 due to lack of mail service to the community. The town became an election precinct in 1903 under the provisions of Amendment No. 2 to the Constitution of Arkansas which granted voting rights to citizens "subject to military or naval duty." The first municipal building was erected in 1907-08 at what is now First Avenue and Main Street; it served as both the Town Hall and City Hall until recently when fire damage caused its demolition in 2001-02; new construction began on October 10th, 2002 with completion less than two months later On July 11th 1919 a tornado touched down near Arkadelphia killing 5 people including 3 children playing nearby before dissipating over Little Rock . It remains one of the most deadliest tornadoes ever recorded within Arkansas .
According to the Arkansas History Center, Arkadelphia was founded in 1871 by John H. Brown. The area that is now Arkadelphia was part of the Cherokee Nation until 1830 and then became a part of the United States of America. In 1861, it was incorporated as a town and quickly grew due to its location near the Arkansas River. By 1920, Arkadelphia had a population of approximately 100,000 people. In 1937, the town laid off all its citizens except for about 30 who remained inArkadelphia to run the local hospital and school system. The remaining residents were granted citizenship in 1942 and voted to dissolve their city government two years later. The city officially ceased exist on January 1, 1945 when all its citizens left for good.
