It was named for the place where the town of Yuma now stands. The first Europeans to visit what is now Yuma were the Pedro de Alcala Expedition in 1540 and 1541. The mission of San Xavier del Bac was founded here by Father José Antonio Zaragoza on September 4, 1768. In 1867, Mormon settlers from Utah arrived in what is today Phoenix and began to build Santa Fe Station as part of their wagon train journey from Nauvoo Illinois to Salt Lake City Utah. On November 30th 1867 an agreement was reached between Brigham Young and Mexican President José Joaquín Tarrega allowing American citizens free passage through Mexico if they built a fortification along the southern border known as Fort Sumner within Mexican territory east of Tucson Arizona Territory (later Baja California). The fortification stood until it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1886 which also destroyed most of Tucson AZ . On February 14th 1861 Governor Don Juan Baca ordered Captain Manuel García Marroquin to take command of all forces stationed at Yuma including 6 companies of volunteers under Lieutenant Colonel David Hackett commanding Companies A & G New Mexico Volunteer Infantry Regiment with orders to suppress any Indian uprising or violence that might occur amongst his troops while occupying this portion of Arizona Territory; according to contemporary sources there were "no less than 10 separate skirmishes" during García's occupancy leading some people to dub him ""El Comandante Mayor"" or "the captain general". On July 8th 1862 General James Halleck recommended that because hostilities had subsided all units would be withdrawn but on October 3rd 1862 Field Marshal Ulysses S Grant announced plans for military action against Apache Indians who had attacked cattle trains near Doña Ana River junction south-east of Tucson AZ ; General Worth ordered García Marroquin not only into action but also ordered him "...to take possession [of] every post existing...in order that we may put an end to these robberies." As a result on October 25th 1862 Captain García Marroquin reported he had secured all posts except Post 4 located about 2 miles due north-west Of Hearst Ranch about 12 miles due east-southeast Of Prescott AZ . This event led directly to the Battle at Little Cottonwood Canyon when two thousand Apaches attacked three hundred men under General Worth's command resulting in one death and five injuries including four Officers killed and six wounded; thereafter Apache raiding parties ceased completely although sporadic raids continued until 1874 when Ulysses S Grant withdrew all cavalry fromArizona Yuma first saw activity during World War I when mustard gas shells were fired from artillery pieces placed nearby. During World War II small arms fire took place off shore from Naval Base Camp McDowell where USS Midway Air Group patrolled off Southern California coast over water towards Japan during World War II In 1951 Yuma voters passed resolution asking Congress for funds needed for improvements such as better schools, open air markets and parks etc., following enactment of Senate Bill 505 which allocates half US$2 million dollars per year towards special needs infrastructure projects within each state senate district with matching money available thru appropriations Acts subsequent thereto On November 16th 1959 residents organized themselves into Local School District No 710 after years effort spearheaded by Mrs Doris Robertson who served as its first president Yuma has experienced many ups and downs since its establishment but continue making strides in various areas such as becoming a major center for commerce, government services, arts & culture/the performing arts with events being hosted throughout downtown core annually
