He found good ground for farming but also mineral deposits that could be developed. In 1915, when he died at age 73 years old from a heart attack while exploring near Flagstaff, his son Winton took over operations of the family's business interests in Yuma County until he succeeded him as governor of Arizona Territory in 1923. Winton was a leader during both World War I and World War II and played an important role in developing defense strategies for both countries. After leaving office as governor in 1946, he retired to live full time at his rancho until his death four years later at age 93 years old. As governor Winton left behind a legacy of development and growth throughout southeastern Arizona including Yuma County which continues today through its many businesses and organizations including the Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CBI), The Young America’s Foundation (YAF), Phoenix Sports Authority (PSA) – home to two NBA teams – Suns/Marquette Grizzlies/Bucks/Lakers etc., Valley National Bank Stadium where college football games are played each year (including this year’s Cotton Bowl game) as well as numerous other civic organizations
