Yuma, Arizona is a small town in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The population was 113,818 as of 2010. It is part of the Tucson–Phoenix Urban Area. Yuma became a city in 1912 and was re-established as a village in 1920. It has since grown to become one of the largest cities in Arizona by population size and by acreage. The first European settlement at what is now Yuma dates back to 1834 when Mormon pioneers arrived from Salt Lake City, Utah. A post office called 'Yuma' was established in 1836, but no permanent settlers moved into the area until 1861 when David Bliss organized the Apache County Cavalry for Colonel James Hance's AZ Cavalry Department during the Indian Wars. John Sutter arrived at Yuma on July 28, 1866 with his new California Gold Rush fleet and set up an adobe ranch named after himself (Sutterville). By 1870 most of present-day Yuma had been developed as an agricultural community with several stores, schools, churches and homes connected by common streets leading to irrigation ditches supplying nearby cropland fields that were soon being irrigated with water diverted from Canby Creek and other streams near Prescott Valley. In 1916 voters passed an ordinance establishing city government without referendum due to strong support from local businesses who saw it as necessary for growth within a rapidly developing community that had not yet reached its full potential due to restrictions placed on it by neighboring towns which still maintained some vestige of their rural character despite advances in transportation and communication techniques! The first mayor was Wm Hite (1916-1920). Today most residents are descendants of those earliest settlers who continue to live here today including many ranchers, farmers, teachers and doctors who have made this place their home over more than 60 years! City Growth: After almost 20 years of operational stability following passage of ordinance establishing city government without referendum there came a period where all hell broke loose! With rapid population growth (over 100% increase) tax revenues began slipping while services such as public libraries were cut or refused; Recreation Director Harry Kapp resigned effective October 1st because he could not find enough funding for ball games; School District Superintendent Mrs Tomlinson recommended closure of school on November 15th because "the only job open for girls" within his district; finally fire marshal J C Boyle suggested use of teargas against demonstrators outside City Hall on December 8th when they prevented passage of controversial resolutions seeking annexation into Mesa County; although widely condemned throughout Arizona these tactics served both our interests at the time and subsequent justification given our rapidly growing status quo! A New Century: Although faced with increasing challenges over budget deficits beginning in the late 1990s development stalled again largely due to cultural resistance towards change which led even some elected officials – including Mayor Dean Cain – to refer to downtown areas described as "the business districts" insteadof "the heartland". However recent initiatives such as Measure V which will see appropriations earmarked specifically for downtown redevelopment have restarted discussions about how best To move forward together towards revitalization goals? mayoral candidate Lori Laughlin has already stated her intention to work directly with businesses/ developers involved in downtown redevelopment efforts if she becomesMayor
