When the first Europeans arrived in Yuma, they were met with hostility and violence. The area was a hotbed of Native American activity and there was no security to protect the settlers from their attackers. As a result, many of the early European explorers who exploration this part of Arizona were killed or taken prisoner by the native people. In 1821, Captain John Harker became the first white man to explore this land when he set out from Tucson on his way to find a route to California. He passed through Yuma on his way south and it is here that he named the area after himself – Harker's Pass (now known as Apache Pass). The Spanish name for this region was Gila River Valley because of its location between two ranges of mountains – Catalina Mountains and Mogollon Mountains. The area around present-day Yuma had been inhabited by various Aboriginal peoples for thousands of years before any Europeans arrived. Some believe that these people may have been related to the ancient Puebloans who lived in what is now central Mexico City. It wasn't until later in history that Europeans began exploring this region and beginning to build settlements here. By 1850, Yuma had become an important trading center due to its location at one of three crossing points for wagon routes connecting Arizona with California and Oregon. In 1861, during World War I, Yuma played an important role in supplying ammunition for both sides involved in hostilities across Europe. After World War II ended, trade slowed down as production centered around agriculture only; however, Yuma experienced significant growth over ensuing decades due in large part to population growth within Mexican Consulate jurisdiction which concentrated resources near downtown areas such as Chaparral Park/Yumalá Street/Alameda Street etc., making it easier for locals access education & services while also fostering social & economic integration among local businesses owners etc.–thus enabling today’s young entrepreneurs/investors looking for opportunities in tomorrow’s economy

Yuma was founded in 1885 by two brothers, John and George Yuma. The first post office in the community was established in 1888. In 1912, a small irrigation canal was completed to facilitate agricultural growth. By 1916, Yuma had a population of 130 people and a small school. The military built Camp Apache in 1918 as part of World War I efforts to besieged Arizona City; the camp served as a storage depot for food and munitions for the war effort. Aszona Electric Cooperative was organized in 1919 and became one of the first electrical cooperative companies in the United States. In 1923, the city approved its first councilman election system; since then, every three years has seen an election for city councilmember. Beginning in 1951, water services were provided from Phoenix Municipal Water District; afterward, general service maintenance responsibility transferred to Yuma Valley Water District until 1989 when it was assumed by Phoenix Municipal Utilities
