Gun targets have been a part of Yuma, Arizona for over 100 years. In that time, the targets have been used for training and competition as well as to provide enjoyment for many people. The first gun target in Yuma was erected in 1885 by Captain H.E. Bosworth and Lt. Wm.D. Kingman. It was a simple affair consisting of an open ground piece with two iron posts set up at right angles to it, about 20 feet distant from each other on a small rise in the center of the field). The posts were 25 feet high and 5 feet wide at their base, and the object was to shoot a stone off at either post at any given moment by means of an iron harpoon or bowstring stretched across its top (Fig 1). This type of target continued to be used until 1896 when new artificial turf became available and replaced wooden stakes as the mainstay of gunship shooting in Yuma (Figs 2-3). From 1898 until 1922 there was only one annual gun target tournament held in Yuma which consisted of three rounds: machineguns (6 inch), pistols (P239) and shotguns ( pump action shotguns with fixed barrels) (Figs 4-5). After 1922 rifle tournaments began being held every year with 3 rounds; however, pistol tournaments still took place every year until 1945 when they were discontinued due to World War II restrictions ongunnery activity within country borders After World War II all competitive gunfire stopped inside United States borders so there is no record of what types or numbers of guns Targets were built after 1945 However interestingly some old fashioned WWI style Target Guns are still kept around town such as this one located near Main Street & Broadway

Yuma's history dates back to 1864 when it was known as the "White town" and was the terminus of stagecoach routes between Tucson and Prescott. The discovery of oil in 1901 led to the growth of Yuma as an oil center with interests in production, refining, marketing and transportation. In 1912 Yuma became a city through annexation by Phoenix. The first post office opened in 1864; it was moved to its current location in 1886. The first school in what is now Yuma opened in 1885 and served grades one through twelve. In 1912 Yuma annexed Phoenix and became its own city with its own police department, fire department and public library system. In 1916 during World War I American troops under General John J Pershing landed at Guadalupe Island on Southern California's Channel Islands seeking supplies for their campaign against trench warfare across Europe; they established Camp Jerome onshore near present-day downtown Yuma to house these troops until they could be sent downriver or ashore to fight from inland positions farther inland. Some soldiers who disembarked at Guadalupe Island camped where Red Rock Canyon now stands before moving back inland for winter quarters about a mile (1 kilometer) southeast of today's downtown core of buildings that were built primarily during World War II as military barracks for defense against air raids by Japan over central Arizona City (now Mesa). This area remains undeveloped except for some small parcels adjacent to hills used today as local landfill sites due to civilian populations having abandonment fears after Japanese bombing raids stopped over central Phoenix City beginning on October 14 1945), which destroyed most buildings within 1 mile (2 kilometers) radius around central Mesa during that night raid.; however remnants still stand including several pre-war structures such as Ft Bowie Barracks which are currently leased out by mesa national park)
