In 1907 there were 2 mills in town but they closed due to lack of customers; these mills had been built by Chinese immigrants who made flour for export from China during this time period according to some sources. In 1912 an open-air swimming pool opened called Lake Chaparral which served as a public baths until 1978 when it became part of Municipal Park District #1(). In 1922 an amusement park called Empire State Park was opened which served as a fundraiser for many local schools including Yuma High School through 1935 when it closed because of budget cuts mandated by Phoenix mayor Thomas J . Reilly even though Empire State Park had been acquired by city fathers earlier that year for just $5 per acre!
