Yuma, Arizona is a city in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 61,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area and is located on the southern border of that area with Tucson. Yuma is also home to Tohono O'odham Nation. The first European settlers in what became Yuma were Mormon missionaries who arrived in 1851. By 1870, there were over 100 white people living in what would become Yuma Township and about 300 Native American residents including the Apache and Navajo Indians. The first post office was established in 1875; it was renamed Yuma by Territorial Governor Manuel Landa after he reached yuma Lake from Tombstone on his way to seek supplies for his army during the Mexican-American War. In 1907, parts of what are now San Juan County were organized as Pima County which included much of today's east side of Yuma City limits including downtown and much of present day Tohono O'odham Nation land eastward to just south of US 60/I-10 (including some sections within present day Olney). In 1912 developer Hiram Sibley set out to develop an irrigation canal through central Pima County that would provide water for farming operations around Flagstaff and Prescott while also providing access to new markets for agricultural goods raised by local tribes along the way. After years of debate over whether or not to build the canal because it would cross privately owned land without government approval or because its proposed route could have important impact on tribal resources, voters approved $5 million bond issue in 1916 to begin construction which eventually connected Flagstaff with Prescott via Tuttle Dam upstream from today's town center. The original design called for a single lane road running west-to-east but due to engineering concerns regarding potential landslides caused by heavy rains during construction; two lanes were added as well as a four-way stoplight at river mile marker 5 near today's intersection I-10/US 60 (and concurrent SR 85) before rejoining US 60 northbound just south of Tuttle Dam village entrance beyond today's old town center all current traffic flows use only one lane now approaching from EAST on I-10 towards downtown park Circle Road becomes WEST on I-10 approaching THE DAMSRT from SOUTHWEST

In 1916–1917 Anglo American Oil Company built the first oil rig in what would become known as Maricopa County outside of Phoenix and began production at Waddell Field; this started off a boomtown atmosphere that continues to this day with businesses such as McDonalds, Taco Bell, AT&T Wireless Headquarters, Old Navy stores and many more located all throughout downtownomics today!
