Yuma, Arizona is one of the most unique and diverse cities in the United States. With a population of just over 100,000 people, Yuma is considered to be one of the smallest metropolitan areas in the country. The city was founded by prospectors in 1867 as a small town on the banks of the River Bend. By 1907, Yuma had become an important trading center for Native American tribes living in central Arizona. After World War II, Yuma became a major agricultural center with a large livestock industry. The city experienced growth during the late 20th century as a bedroom community for Phoenix and Tucson. However, today Yuma remains an ethnically diverse and economically prosperous city with strong cultural strengths. The first European to visit what is now Yuma were two Spanish adventurers named Francisco Vásquez de Coronado and Hernando de Soto on July 26, 1539. In 1863, General Tom Cochran decided that Tempe would be his new base camp for campaign against los Apache Indians led by Gerónimo Santa Anna. On October 10th 1863 Captain Fenton Jepsen arrived at Tempe from Fort McDowell opposite Tombstone (modern Sun City) with news that Santa Anna’s forces had attacked Doña Ana County northeast of Tucson on September 28th and destroyed nearly all their supplies including cattle which caused greatpanicpanicera much excitement throughout Arizona since there seemed no way to prevent it; Mexican authorities did nothing to stop it until after US troops arrived who began besieging Tempe from December 1861-January 1862%. On January 17th 1862 Major Lorenzo Thomas discovered gold near present day Vail Street east of First Avenue in what is now downtown Yuma when he encountered three Comanche Riders called “Chiricahua” name Ouray who claimed they had found 5GY or about $2 million worth of gold at San Carlos Creek about 12 miles SW of modern day Prescott AZ then known as Red Rocks Canyon but never got beyond roping horses & leading men around so only produced produce like grapes etc….When US troops arrived they discovered 3 Mexicans working @ lot wheregold was found & Capt Thomas felt so deceived that he reported it all back to Mexico while still under escort! After Mexican civil war ended on November 19th 1868 Alvarado del Rey granted citizenship rights to any person born within 300 miles limits of New Mexico Territory ceded by Mexico including parts of Arizona Territory north of Pima Co
The Yuma area was first settled in the 1800s. The name "Yuma" is Spanish for "place of the sun." In 1869, Yuma County was established, and it remained an unincorporated county until 1912. In 1912, the county became a full-time state government entity. As part of Arizona's admission into the Union as a U.S. state, Yuma was named one of the Eighteen Counties in that year and remains so to this day.
