Yuma is located on the Gila River and forms a natural border with neighboring Apache County to the east and Maricopa County to the west. The name "Yuma" comes from two words: yuma (a word meaning "place where buffalo grazed") and amo (a suffix -i- added to certain names in Indian country). In 1867, John Wesley Powell traveled through this area while exploring the Gila River Valley and named what he found along its banks, including Amo Lake, Amo Hills, and Amo Springs after these animals. The first settlement within present-day Yuma City limits was made in 1886 when George Wetherald constructed an adobe ranch on land known then as White Sands National Monument #4 which now comprises much of downtown Yuma. In 1902, Yumen Mining Company began production of gold ore near present-day Goldfield Road outside of town limits. The company name changed to American Gold Fields soon thereafter but operations ceased shortly afterwards because of competition from other gold mines in that same area. Production recommenced for a time in 1908 but ended again due to low gold prices; however, some quantities were produced until 1933 when all operations were discontinued due to World War II restrictions against mining inside U.S./Mexican borders Beginning in 1915, Prescott Air Force Base operated out of an airfield just south of town limits; later it became known as Sky Harbor Airport Today residents are called "Yumans" or simply "Residents".
