When the first shots were fired in Yuma, Arizona on February 14, 1912 it was an event of great significance. The townsite of Yuma had been chosen as the site for the new Bureau of Indian Affairs headquarters. There was a claim to be made for Yuma by its location at the junction of two major trails that crossed the Colorado River. The town quickly became an important stop on these routes and also attracted settlers who needed food and ammunition for their rifles or shotguns. The guns used in this early warfare were simple muzzleloaders which were very inaccurate when compared to modern firearms. This lack of accuracy was due to the primitive technology then available, as well as the fact that many bullets only traveled a few feet before stopping or detonating harmlessly in tall grass or other cover. As time passed however, progress was made with advancements in technology and gunnery that allowed modern firearms to be used effectively against Native Americans. In 1868–69, during the Gadsden Purchase campaign of US President Abraham Lincoln, General James Hance led Confederate forces through Yuma into what is now Mohave County before withdrawing back to San Bernardino Valley. In 1861–62 Wm. Halleck established Camp Cooke east of present day Mescalero on Santa Rita Creek near today's town of Tecate; he called it "Hale's Springs." On 2 October 1862 Union Major John Cushing discovered gold nuggets at Alamogordo Gulch about north of Yuma while exploring for gold with his lieutenant Colonel Colter Beall along the Placer River system; their find brought great excitement to California miners and soon miners were traveling here for guidance on how to prospect for gold nearby placer mines including Cochise Mesa northeast of downtown Tucson and Oroville Field northwest of today's town of Oroville. The first post office in what is now Pima County was established at Apache Wells Township on 12 October 1865 by Acting Postmaster General J[ames] B[enjamin] Fenton under US president Abraham Lincoln via mail order from Denver Colorado.; it operated until 1 January 1867 when mail service between Tucson and Phoenix became available(). In 1870 George A[lbert] Sperry opened store atcurrent day Commerce Street in downtown Yuma opposite current day Administration Building which he built using lumber salvaged from nearby Fort McKnight barracks destroyed during World War I just west of Cottonwood Road (). A short distance west of Sperry’s store was another store operated by John Wesley Powell which served as his headquarters during his 1912 exploration down Tower Valley () which linked up with Bull Canyon National Monument located east adjacent to Prescott Valley National Monument today south facing Donner Summit National Monument also partaking in Tower Valley (). Nearby were two mining camps: White Sands (later renamed Nacooche) located 3 miles due north at an elevation above mean sea level on wells drilled by prospector/miner William White near present day Anaconda Heights (); Black Mountain () about 8 miles due south along ANP road 10 minutes east southeast corner then southwest around 4½ miles due south along same road 1 mile northwest corner finally ending near Mexico Yuma began annexation efforts by Pinal County following its creation following November 9th 1860 election when all but 6 districts within Arizona had come into being subsequently including portions east sideof Nacooche River lying within modern-day Los Angeles County including that portion lying east side now partaking in Maricopa County . From December 30th 1860 until March 14th 1861 three board meetings were held regarding annexation proceedings but only one decisionwas made after protracted argument over boundary changes among various party members and editors from newspapers serving those areas not included within newly formed PinalCounty.–Curtis Ritchie

Yuma is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The land that would become Yuma was first surveyed by Captain James reserve in 1864. The town of Prescott was founded on July 20, 1867 by postmaster John Sutter and other early settlers after a gold rush in the nearby Gila Mountains caused some to cross the border into what is now Pima County for gold prospecting. On January 10, 1870, Ulysses S. Grant signed an executive order creating Pima County from portions of Cochise and Maricopa counties south of the Tohono O'odham reservation line east of Interstate 10. In 1912, following passage of the National Defense Act which required all states to have military installations within their borders for defense purposes, Congress passed Public Law 7962 which created Yuma Air Force Base as one of 12 such installations around the country undersecretary Harry Hopkins's Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA). With World War I pushingpleting its course, President Woodrow Wilson activated Army Air Service units stationed at several bases across America in April 1917 so that they could be used in Europe when Germany began bombing American cities; however this move also activated American forces stationed at Apache Junction southeast of Phoenix – thus starting what would eventually become known as "the desert wars". In 1925 General Leonard Ewert became Commandant after his predecessor Colonel Arthur Wirtz resigned because he did not support new Chief Operating Officer LtCol Harry Humes's plans for enlarging Army aviation operations beyond fighter pilot training detachments only onto general purpose troop carrier aircraft instead of bomber types). By 1933 there were 9 detachments with 1 enlistedman each aboard 169 planes operating out over 3 million passengers per year flying freight or passengers to more than 100 destinations including Honolulu and San Francisco; but oil exploration interrupted these activities until 1939 when Major General Leslie Riddle assumed command with orders to expand oil production on both sides of Mexico City from El Paso downriver through Juárez into Texas finally reaching Oklahoma City by way OF Albuquerque whereupon Major General Riddle ordered Tenth Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Hoyt Vandenberg to fly his Boeing 247 tanker plane directly over Ensenada without dropping any bombs during Operation Longhorn daylight raid against Mexican airfields on October 17th off Brownsville Island killing 15 Mexicans while causing no damage or casualties among American forces."
