The history of scopes in Tucson goes back to 1892 when E.F. Hutton and W.H. Shaw purchased a 3-foot diameter telescope from the British company, Lewis & Clark Expedition fame, for $2,500. The scope was used by the expedition to study the Phoenix Mountains and other objects in southern Arizona. In 1916, Fenton Osborn bought a 2 1/4-inch Schmidtian reflector telescope from Dr. George Hale of Yale University for $1,950 and soon began using it toObserve stars at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Colorado Springs, Colorado; he also made use of it on land surveys in northcentral Arizona during World War I. On October 15th 1922 Mr Osborn donated his telescope to the University of Arizona as part of its collection of optical equipment which was include an 8-inch Dobsonian reflector Telescope (1924), a 4 1/2-inch refractor telescope (1926), and a 3-foot diameter Newtonian reflector Telescope (1929). The telescopes were moved into their current location on Eastwood Drive in Tucson on November 17th 1929 where they remain today as part of UA's astronomy program along with other equipment from OSBORN'SArizona Survey Expedition including binoculars (1893), an opera glass camera(1900), stereoscopic glasses(1890), a barometer(1892), a seismograph(1920) and more than 100 scientific instruments during that period including: an observatory sextant(1895), chronometers (1902)and an airgun.(1920).

The history of Tucson can be traced back to 1881 when Captain James Hance established his post at what is now known as La Plaza de Mayo downtown for military purposes during the Mexican-American War. In 1912 Tucson was incorporated as a town according to an act of Congress and soon began to grow with new businesses opening up including hotels, restaurants, stores and other commercial ventures which served as engines for growth throughout much of the 1920s and 1930s. Postwar development took hold with new homes being built along East Pima Street such as Regency Towers (now part of University Village) which opened in 1949; Westside Drive (now Loop 202) becoming a major thoroughfare; Hoover Airport opening in 1950; Tempe Municipal Airport opening later that year (later closed); and finally Desert View Park developed near Interstate 10 north of downtown beginning in 1957 which remains one of the city’s longest continuously operated parks today with over 120 acres under its management. Many famous people have lived or worked in Tucson including John F Kennedy who was assassinated here almost seventy years ago while living at Hare Krishna Temple #1 on East Pima Street; Elvis Presley who died here aged 38 following a performance at US Airways Arena on January 8th 1956 just two weeks shy of his 50th birthday; Bob Hope who entertained troops during World War II stationed here before moving permanently back to Hollywood three decades later; Ulysses S Grant whom President Woodrow Wilson appointed Ambassador to Mexico City before he became president from 1868-1879 also spent time here before returning home late one night after drinking at El Rancho de la Luna near Fort Huachuca Plains; actor/comedian Pat Boone who filmed several episodes for The Beverly Hillbillies here between 1957-1958 while residing above Robinson’s Camera Shop on North First Street prior to moving into his own house across First Avenue from Valley National Bank & Trust Company where he continued shooting until his death less than two months later due natural causes at age 81 years old on October 5th 1958 surrounded by family members present including wife Joan Turpin Boones widow until her death less than 12 months later from ovarian cancer); Mayor Barry Goldwater who unsuccessfully ran for Vice President against Richard Nixon in 1980 although some say he may have won if not for irregularities within the election process considered fraudulent under then-current law Today there are many popular tourist attractions available within walking distance such as Old Town Scottsdale or Downtown Mesa which are both packed with galleries, museums and shopping options while east side neighborhoods like Midtown Mesa or South Mountain have become trendier areas offering funky cafes and stylish boutiques followed by traditional nightlife venues like Just For Laughs comedy club or Joe's Pub all located within close proximity to each other making this city truly liveable no matter what your interests may be!
