McCormick who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then become the Governor of New Mexico Territory. On November 30, 1912, General John P. McCormick dedicated the new City Hall building which served as the first municipal office building in Tucson. In 1916, Mayor Clarence King started construction on what became known as “The Cathedral” which housed the city's first library and also served as City Hall until it burned down in 1966. In 1928, during President Herbert Hoover's administration, Arizona Statehood was granted to Tucson by President Coolidge with help from Secretary of State Henry Morgenthau Jr.. On February 14th 1929 Mayor King announced that construction of University Park had been completed and would be opened tothe public soon.present day
