In 1865, Tucson residents George Wickersham and William Hickey filed a patent for an improved version of this handgun called the "Tucson No 1." The weapon was designed to shoot revolvers with four rounds per minute instead of the two rounds per minute required by other types of handguns at that time. The first successful shooting event using these weapons occurred on July 29, 1866, when 20 friends participated in a banquet at the home of Senator Charles Sumner (R-MA) to celebrate his inaugural year as Governor of Massachusetts. At this event, Tucson residents George Wickersham and Hiram Johnson placed second in a competition sponsored by Alexander Cartwright (D-NY) to win rifles suitable for use with pistols shot at 100 yards from a prone position. Johnson won the rifle match against Wickersham; however, Wickersham would later become known as one of America's most accomplished pistol shooters and serve as president Calvin Coolidge's personal aide during World War II

This name stuck and Mictlan became Tucson when General Antonio Luna moved his army from Yuma to explore what lay beyond San Diego in 1819. During Mexican Independence War (1846-48), Governor Manuel Micheltorena created a military district encompassing most of what are now Pima County and part of Cochise County under command of Brigadier general Pedro Carmona Mesaverde. On July 12, 1847, Mesaverde's forces attacked an American wagon train traveling from Santa Fe to Prescott prompted a pursuit byAmerican troops under Lieutenant colonel George Ahern which ended with Mesaverde's capture on July 16th near present-day Tubac Mountains Some sources say that Mesaverde was hanged or beheaded after his capture but others state he escaped unharmed into Sonora where he joined friendly Apache bands After Mexican independence was won in 1859, General Tomás Romero established civil government here as part of New Mexico Territory . In 1861–62 General John Custer fought during the American Civil War at Palo Alto River Bridge northeast of Tucson . Afterward many soldiers settled around eastside town including Captain Doniphan’s Adobe Walls In 1912 Tucson became an incorporated city following passage of Resolution No 1115 “To provide for municipal organization within Pima County” by the board Of Trustees The first mayor was Harry Waugh who served two terms followed by Frank Cook who served four terms until his death on December 6th 1924 Cook had been elected mayoralty twice before but never got past winning second place each time Voters decided not to run again so Ward 1 Councillor Charles Weems took office instead on December 6th 1924 until his death November 3rd 1933 Weems had previously been Councilman from Ward 2 since 1923
