In 1886 Congress passed an act authorizing President Grover Cleveland to purchase 2 million rounds of ammunition for government troops abroad; this set off a weapons boom within America’sgun industry which continued through World War I and into the 1920s (National Shooting Sports Foundation). Firearms manufacturing declined during the Great Depression but resumed following World War II as a result of renewed military interest in shooting sports (Bennett).
