The Tempe History Museum is a museum located in the city of Tempe, Arizona. It was founded in 1984 and is dedicated to the history of the city and its surrounding area.
Tempe, Arizona is an American city in the Phoenix metropolitan area, located in central Arizona. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 2,827. The name Tempe was derived from Arizonan Apache Chief Hualapai and European explorer George W. Smith's pronunciation of "the mountain where the Hills meet." The first permanent settler in what is now Tempe was James Cook who named it after his friend Sir John Franklin. In 1864 Mormon General Joseph Smith founded the town on land donated by Mariano Rivera. In 1912 Tempe became part of Arizona Territory when that state was created from portions of New Mexico and Colorado. The City Council granted autonomy to the city on December 12, 1916 through Resolution No. 592 which stated: "It is hereby resolved that this City be considered as a separate municipality within Arizona." On January 15, 1917 Mayor John Ahern proclaimed Tempe "the Municipal Borough of Tempe". The vote for independence came about due to disagreements between some members of City Council over taxation issues and lack of support from other localities within Arizona for having their own mayor even though they were technically part of Tempe proper. On July 11, 1922 incorporation papers were filed with the secretary of state indicating thatTempe had reached its 1,000th resident marker and thus became a borough with full municipal powers including street cleaning and zoning ordinances; however all services previously provided by vice-presidents were transferred to borough status effective at midnight November 15th 1922. This effectively ended most civic activity outside the limits established by resolution No 592 until 1967 when annexation proceedings commenced for much surrounding territory resulting in another 1,000th resident marker being reached on October 17th 1997 giving full civic rights to all residents without any involvement by borough officials or referendum process

In 1838, Nicholas-Jacques Conte designed and built the first telescope, which was called the “Conte” Telescope. The Conte Telescope allowed astronomers to view stars and planets in unprecedented detail. The first permanent observatory dedicated to astronomical observation was constructed in 1795 by Dr. Benjamin Franklin at Philadelphia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. The observatory was known as the Franklin Observatories and it became the home of America’s first professional astronomical club, the American Astronomical Society (AAS). With new technology such as photography, television, and radar, spotters have increased their ability to watch celestial events from a distance. With advances in optics, sights, software, and accessories, today’s astronomer can enjoy some of the most comprehensive views of our universe available.

In 1912 the city was renamed to honor John Averell Harriman who had donated land to be used as a university campus. The first building on the campus opened as an engineering school called Arizona State Teachers College on February 10th 1914. Today ASTC continues to serve as one of Tempe's primary teaching institutions with campuses located throughout central Phoenix and Mesa
Tempe was founded in 1912 by a group of Tempeans who wanted to found their own town. The name "Tempe" is derived from the Apache word "tema."
