In the Tempe area there have been a number of shootings that have taken place. There have been shootings where people were killed and others injured. December 2007- A gunman opened fire at a shopping center in Tempe, Arizona injuring four people before shooting himself dead. 2. October 2009- A gunman shot and wounded two people inside an Arizona Cardinals game after opening fire on the crowd from a parking lot across the street from Chase Field stadium. 3. April 2010- Three people were shot outside of a restaurant near University Avenue and Scottsdale Road in Tempe when two gunmen arrived in cars with firearms drawn and began firing indiscriminately at pedestrians who had gathered around the restaurant windows to order food or drink. One person was killed and three were injured before police arrived to take control of the scene. 4. February 2012- A gunman walked into an Arizonan Safeway store armed with a handgun and pulled out shots, striking one employee before turning his gun on himself inside the store just prior to closing time, killing himself while seven other employees were trapped inside during what was effectively an mass shooting within minutes of each other across three different stores throughout Phoenix metro area supermarkets

This change may be due to public awareness campaigns that focus on gun safety instead of just warfare strategy or cultural changes within American society which has shifted from an emphasis on hunting/gathering practices towards urban living (Flamm)
