The history of gun magazines in Tempe, Arizona can be traced back to the early days of firearms. In 1892, Tempe's first pistol and rifle magazine was opened by Wm. E. Storey and J. H. Garrison in a small room on Third Street. At that time, Tucson had only a few handguns and no rifles or shotguns. The Tempe Rifle and Pistol Club was organized in 1903 to help support the growth of gun ownership in the city. By 1912, there were six gun magazines operating in Tempe- four for pistols and two for rifles- making it one of the most populous cities with its own firearm culture outside of Mexico City! Today, Tempe has three active gun magazines- both for handguns and rifles- as well as five participating shooting schools that offer classes to teach people how to shoot guns safely and responsibly. Gun magazine activity is also increasing in other Arizona cities such as Phoenix, Chandler, Mesa, Gilbert, Flagstaff etc., underscoring just how popular firearms ownership has become hereabouts!

The Tempe Gun Club has been meeting monthly since 1916. The club was organized in 1916 by three citizens of Tempe, Harry Crouch, W.J. Schultz and George Ahern. In 1917 the club member Arthur Funk created the first Pistol Training Course in Tempe which was held at his home on West Monroe Street. In 1919 the club began to offer classes in Rifle Shooting and Pistol Shooting which continued until World War II when it merged with the Arizona Rifleman Association to form the Arizona Gun Club Incorporated (AGC). After World War II, membership dwindled as many people left for jobs or country reasons. In 1955 AGC amalgamated with Phoenix-based gunsmiths shop Western Armory to formWestern Arms & Ammunition Corporation (WAC). In 1967 WAC merged with American Metalworking Company to become American Metalworks Corporation (AMC) which continued operations until 1984 when AMC merged with National Firearms Industry Solutions Corporation (NFIS), a firearms manufacturer, to create National Firearms Industries, Incorporated (NFI).
