Tempe, Arizona is a city located in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The population of the city was 153,723 at the 2010 census. The name comes from Arizona Territory (the land grant given to USA by Mexico), which was named for Tempe, England. In 1912, Tempe became a municipality and in 1959 it became an incorporated city. As of the 2000 census, there were 162,347 people living in Tempe proper and 104,563 people living in annexed annexes within the city limits. The racial makeup of the city as of 2000 was 84% White, 12% Black or African American, 2% Native American, 1% Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% from other races and 5% from two or more races. The total Hispanic or Latino population of the city was 11%. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Tempe on November 16th 1864 by wagon train led by Captain James Waddell with 40 men under his command. They were looking for a site that could be used as a wintering ground for their unit commanded by Major John Crealock during his march across country to cut off transportation routes leading to Tucson from Mexican territory
The Tempe area was first settled by the Arikara people in about 1800. The town was founded on a small creek called Tonto Creek, which was later renamed Arizona Springs. In 1867, the United States government established the Graham Reservation in what is now Phoenix. The reservation included much of central and eastern Phoenix. As a result of this policy, Tempe became one of the most developed towns in Arizona. In 1912,Tempe hosted the first modern Olympics in America. The city also played an important role during World War II as it served as a military base for the U.S. Army and Air Force. After the war, Tempe grew slowly but steadily until its peak in the late 1960s and early 1970s when it experienced rapid growth due to its location within easy access to major highways and other economic opportunities. However, although Tempe has experienced some recent prosperity, it remains an economically struggling city with high crime rates and low levels of education and employment opportunities for its residents
