Tempe, Arizona is a city located in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The population of the city was 149,871 at the 2010 census. The name "Tempe" comes from Tucson's old name of Tempehuela meaning "place where wheat is grown." In 1881, a group of American Indians led by José María Pascual Gabriel García Márquez settled in what is now Tempe and began to cultivate maize and other crops. The first store in Tempe opened on July 20, 1881. On November 3, 1888 the railroad arrived in town and soon after new businesses were opened including a hotel and two banks. Valley Air Lines served as the first airline in Arizona. On December 5, 1912 George Wright founded Wright-Patterson Air Force Base which later became home to the US Air Force's 1st Tactical Fighter Wing (1TFW). Located adjacent to today's Joe Arpaio Airport on McCain Boulevard near 22nd Avenue South, 1TFW operated delta-winged Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft during World War II until its disbanding in 1945. During 1949–1951 Tempe was home to Mesa College which offered courses leading up to law enforcement officer training under FBI director J Edgar Hoover; this course met at an abandoned military post across from Scottsdale Municipal Airport which still stands today as part of Campus Martius Park . In 1951 Mesa College relocated to downtown Phoenix and changed its name to Arizona State University with campuses throughout Phoenix County In 1957 Valley Trading Company moved into what is now One Bank Plaza shopping center east of McDowell Road; it was here that Valley Brewing Company was founded by Harry Anderson on January 8, 1959. Other early businesses included Goldwater Chevrolet (later Golden Corral), Montero's Pizza (later Domino's Pizza), Fiesta Bowl Golf Course (now University Hills Golf Course) and Service Station #2 located along I-10 east of Eight Mile Road near Shea Boulevard The following year valleywrestling made their debut at Gila River Arena when they took on Salt Lake City’s United States Army All Americans Wrestling team.; this event remains one of the most remembered events associated with Valley Wrestling . Valley Broadcasting Corporation signed on as local broadcaster for all sports events beginning with college football games played at Gila River Arena starting August 15th 1960 through May 6th 1966; this station continues today as KPHO Fox Sports 1050 KRQE
