The name " Surprise" was chosen because it was the only place in the area with an adobe building that could be seen from a distance. The first post office in Surprise opened on October 14, 1896. In 1907, the population of Surprise was just over 100 people and the only industry was agriculture. However, due to Ghost Town syndrome, which is when small towns experience rapid growth and decline due to factor such as joblessness and high crime rates, Surprise experienced rapid growth starting in the 1970s until it reached its current size of about 30,000 residents. The ghost town phenomena began happening in nearby Tombstone during the same time period but there were no reports of anyone disappearing or being haunted there. One theory suggests that some people living near Tombstone started seeing ghosts because they thought their town might be gone after gold discovery at Apache Pass occurred nearby. Another theory suggests that these new residents may have been responsible for bringing ghost sightings to neighboring towns like Prescott and Window Rock because they believed those places were abandoned too! One thing is for sure - everyone who has ever lived in Surprise loves it! The community has strong ties to its history and culture which can be seen throughout its buildings and products.
