The incorporated community was founded on December 12, 1902 by Frank J. Haggerty with the name of "Haggerty's Ranch". The post office was established at the ranch on October 14, 1903. The first store in Surprise opened its doors in 1904. A school was built in 1905 and operated until 1917 when it became the first Indian school west of the Santa Fe Trail to become fully accredited by the American School Board. In 1912, a cotton gin and mill were built at nearby Cottonwood Heights which helped make Surprise one of the most prosperous small towns in America during this time period. In 1955, Tucson-based General Dynamics Corp., then part of Northrop Grumman Corporation (now Lockheed Martin), leased land east of town for their new shipyards including a large water treatment plant and associated buildings known as Reynolds Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company campus today known as Northrop Grumman’s Desert Research Center (DRC). The company employed up to 2,000 people during their initial years there before moving production offshore to Malaysia due to competition from Ford Motor Company’s Malaysian plants. In 1957 they again moved production offshore but this time to Singapore due to regulations that required ships larger than 300 feet (100 meters) length have engines that could be fired only from stem level or below; this limited development opportunities for smaller companies like Northrop Grumman who did not have engines big enough for these vessels. After several years production returned back home in 1961 thanks largely to incentives from Defense Department under President John F Kennedy Jr.; however continued growth outsideLockheedMartin until 1997 when all remaining operations were located within Dugger Mall across from Dillard’s department store after Lockheed Martin sold its share in Dugger Mall back to Dillard’s parent company JCPenney Incorporated

After World War II ended there were few job opportunities for people outside of agriculture so many people left Surprise until finally it had only 10% of its original population left by 1970 when revenues from gambling started to increase again which led to development once more including large shopping malls that today still dominate the downtown area .
