Surprise, Arizona is a town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Surprise were the Hohokam and their descendants who built villages around 100 A.D. Spanish explorers discovered this area in 1693 and named it San Carlos de la Cueva; they also found gold hereabouts but did not prospect for it because of lack of equipment. In 1867, Don Manuel Chavez organized a Mormon colony in what is now Surprise Valley when he discovered an oasis rich in natural resources near Fort Apache Creek near present-day Tombstone. This discovery led to the discovery of more than $100 million worth of silver and gold in Mexico while exploring this region for mines by Mexican settlers and American miners during the Gold Rush era (1868-1879). The town was incorporated on February 14, 1912, from parts of Surprise Valley, Cave Creek Village (later renamed Bright Angel), Westphalia Village ( later renamed Cottonwood Heights ), Indian Wells Junction (later renamed Deer Park ), New Market Heights , North Star Hills , Poindexter Gulch , Pleasant Hill Cemetery and Rancho Santa Fe . Surprise was founded as a transient campground located along US 66 about 8 miles east of Prescott on Clearwater Canyon Road between 1918-1920 by soldiers returning home from World War I after spending time at nearby Camp Bowie northwest of Prescott. In 1923 real estate developer Waddell Copley opened up what would become the most heavily developed section of Surprise with its own post office, hotel and grocery store called "Cottonwood". In 1931 cotton farmer George Fenton established Homestead Farms adjacent to today's Promise Elementary School which remains today one of the largest agricultural operations west Of Interstate 10 outside Phoenix or Tucson

It is the only incorporated community in Pima County and the second-smallest city in Arizona after Tucson. Surprise was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1885 as a ranching colony. The first post office opened in 1886 and the name of the town changed to Surprise on July 20, 1907 when it became an incorporated community. The history of Surprise begins with Mormon settlers who arrived there during 1885 as part of a wagon train from Nauvoo, Illinois. They were seeking land that had been claimed by them but which had been disputed by other groups of Mormons. When they arrived, they found some high mountain ranges and valleys which would prove to be ideal for their growing colony. By 1888, most of what is now Surprise had been developed - including its first store and school buildings - while still being part of Utah Territory where the Mormons were not welcome because they did not observe Brigham Young's religious views. In 1907, following President Theodore Roosevelt's Executive Order 9066 which prohibited discrimination against any citizens based on race or religion (except for Mexicans), the townspeople petitioned for incorporation into Pima County under the name "Surprise" because that is what their predecessor communities had done in neighboring Apache Junction and Tombstone since 1862 when those towns were founded as military outposts during Indian Wars fought between Apache warriors and U.S.-sponsored forces

Surprise was founded in 1912 by a group of settlers led by John H.Gorman. The town became a popular stop on the Chico-San Francisco Railway, and soon had a population of around 100 people. In 1916, Surprise changed its name to Tucson when it became the capital of Arizona Territory.
