On December 1, 1903, the first tool store in Surprise, Arizona opened its doors. The store was located on East Indian School Road and was run by John H. Goodwin. The store served as a stop on the way to the mines in nearby Cochise County. Goodwin's Tool Store grew quickly and soon became one of the most popular stores in the area. In 1907, Goodwin moved his business to what is now called Old Townsquare Shopping Center and continued to expand their empire into new businesses throughout Surprise until his death in 1951. His son John Goodwin Jr. took over management of the business after his father's death and continues to operate it today as a family-owned business.

The area now includes the city of Surprise and portions of the towns of Window Rock, Tombstone and Saugus.
